To address this problem, we developed a model to help businesses balance the benefits of focus and flexibility. Our model identifies factors that influence whether a company chooses to pursue a cost leadership, differentiation, or focus strategy. It also explains the relationship between these strategies and firm performance, using econometric analyses. The results indicate that a focus strategy is more likely to succeed than either a cost leadership or differentiation strategy. In other words, for each 1% increase in the application of a focus strategy, the FP will be raised by 31.5%. The result of the study indicates that a firm’s choice to apply any of Porter’s generic strategies is able to significantly increase its performance.
